Two partial mid-19th century American oblong penmanship manuals, each measuring approximately 4 x 8.25 inches; all pages shown are included.
- One component consists of the original blue-gray wrapper with 2 pages: engraved title page for The Young Penman, First Lessons, published by Henry Whipple, Salem, Massachusetts, with the first lesson/page attached. The remaining pages from this manual are missing. Inscription is 1840. But may likely be earlier.
- The second component consists of detached engraved penmanship plates from a different publication, including running hand exercises, decorative capital alphabets, Old English and German Text letterforms, and moral maxim copy lines. These pages are loose and incomplete (missingbeginning pages)and appear to be from a separate manual. This may be later than the cover.
Condition overall: partial and incomplete. Pages detached from covers. Foxing, staining, ink marks, edge wear, and age toning throughout. Sold exactly as shown.
Despite incompleteness, the engraved alphabets and calligraphy models remain visually attractive and desirable for collectors of antique penmanship, calligraphy study, typography reference, and early American educational material.
