Up for your consideration is a highly collectible vintage treasure: an authentic, first-generation 1960s Metropolitan Museum of Art (MMA) Egyptian Bastet Cat statue. Meticulously cast with a remarkable, dense weight for its compact size, this official museum store replica is based directly on a Late Period antiquity in The Met's permanent collection. The statuette features the sacred feline protective goddess seated alertly on a stylized plinth base, complete with an incised broad collar and a wedjat-eye protective pectoral amulet. This heavy, miniature, matte dark faux-bronze cat is a rare survivor of museum-replica history. During the mid-to-late 1960s, The Met Store specifically used a heavy antimonial lead or pewter alloy for its miniatures, applying a dark chemical patina or lacquer finish to perfectly mimic ancient leaded bronze. Because this piece is stamped "MMA" on the flat base metal but completely lacks the copyright symbol (©) that became mandatory on their replicas in the 1970s, it distinguishes itself as a highly coveted, 60-year-old early MMA product. It holds far more character, historical integrity, and value to collectors than the lighter, plastic-resin versions sold today.
