💎 Description

In daylight, this Sterling Hill specimen shows a dark, franklinite-rich surface with a granular metallic texture, broken up by pale willemite zones and scattered white patches across the face. Dense and heavy in hand, with classic ore character.

Under shortwave, willemite takes over the specimen with a bright electric green glow covering nearly every face, the dark franklinite threading through as crisp black relief. Longwave tells a different story: the willemite shifts to strong yellow-green patches, and small zones of sphalerite appear as orange accents scattered through the center of the piece. The sphalerite responds under longwave only, so the specimen reads as an all-green display under SW and a green-and-orange display under LW, a nice wavelength-dependent change that makes it fun to show on both lamps.

⸻

🌍 Composition

• Willemite — Zn₂SiO₄ — bright electric green under SW UV, strong yellow-green under LW UV

• Sphalerite — ZnS — orange under LW UV only, non-fluorescent under SW UV

• Franklinite — ZnFe₂O₄ — non-fluorescent at both wavelengths, dark metallic grains providing contrast

• Natural, untreated specimen from the Sterling Hill Mine, Ogdensburg, NJ

⸻
