Photo Overview
London & North Western Railway 4-6-0 Claughton Class No. 2222 “Sir Gilbert Claughton” stands freshly out-shopped on the ballast alongside Crewe Works, England, captured in full broadside to show the elegant lined green LNWR livery and immaculate Stephenson valve gear in 1913. The clean background and works pose indicate an official builder’s portrait produced for publicity and reference before the locomotive entered express passenger service between London Euston and Glasgow.
Named for LNWR chairman Sir Gilbert Henry Claughton, Baronet, No. 2222 was the very first of the Claughton Class and lent its name to the whole 52-engine series that hauled the company’s premier trains until the mid-1930s. Claughton’s tenure steered LNWR through WW1, making this engine a moving tribute to a pivotal figure in British rail history—own this card today and add a true flagship to your collection before another enthusiast snaps it up.
