Before the show, you introduce what looks like an ordinary, store-bought pocket dictionary. You ask a spectator to freely choose a word from its pages and merely concentrate on it in their mind. Only that spectator knows the word, and there seems to be no way anyone else could know what was selected.
In our case we are having a word selected that we will have the spectator think of later during the performance. Only that one spectator knows about the dictionary - and they think that there is no way that you can know what word they chose.
Later, during the performance, you address the spectator and reveal the chosen word with total accuracy. Obviously this is a devious and "invisible" way to do pre-show work, in a manner that can be weaved into so many different mentalism plots during your show.
In the provided instructions, Carlyle has created an ingenious approach to the pre-show work (that I've never seen before - that has numerous applications in ALL your pre-show work, not just this Dictionary), in a way that makes the introduction of the Dictionary "invisible" to the entire process. It has the effect of making the spectator forget that the Dictionary was ever even used. Brilliant.
