This 18th century belt axe was originally made for Isaac Zane\'s Marlboro Furnace, founded 1767 in Middletown, Frederick County, Virginia. Hand forged head with hand carved handle, it is in beautifully preserved and restored condition.
Completely hand crafted, each is unique, along with original antique hardwood handle. These make great gifts for early American history lovers.
You will receive the axe pictured in the main photos. I only have a handful of these remaining and my source has no more.
The British East India Trading Company, founded in 1700, imported iron tools from India to colonial North America prior to the Revolutionary War. The earliest colonial foundries such as Skene\'s NY and Zane\'s VA sold these along with their own iron products. These axes have been stored where made in India since the late 18th century when trade with Britain ended with the Revolution.
Zane was a major manufacturer of munitions for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and continued operations until the 1950s.
This historic tool and weapon helped build and defend colonial America. Sometimes called a Tennessee belt axe.
14 1/2\" long with 4 1/2\" long head. The original tobacco stained handle rhasl age darkening. . The head is secured to handle with an iron wedge and hide glue or pine tar sap.
The head is hand forged, not cast, with hand hand filed details,
Was well preserved in old grease. Cleaned and curated with Kramer\'s Best Antique Improver, a rust reformer and preservative.
