This 18th century belt axe was originally sold by Izaac Zane's Marlboro Furnace, founded 1767 in Middletown, Frederick County, Virginia. Hand forged head with hand carved handle, it is in beautifully preserved and restored condition. Completely hand crafted, each is unique. You will receive the axe pictured.
The British East India Company, founded in 1700, imported iron tools from India to North America prior to the Revolutionary War. Colonial foundries such as Skene's NY and Zane's VA sold these along with their own iron products.
Zane was a major manufacturer of munitions for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and continued operations until the 1950s. These unused axes were made in India for Zane's, warehoused for export to colonial America.
This historic tool and weapon helped build and defend colonial America.
14" long with 4 1/2" long head. The original tobacco stained handle retains its lacquer finish and age darkening. The head is hand forged, not cast, with filed details. The handle is completely hand carved.
