The Bell X-1 was a groundbreaking rocket-powered aircraft developed in the mid-1940s by Bell Aircraft in collaboration with the US military. It became world-famous as the first airplane to fly faster than the speed of sound.
The First Supersonic Flight: On October 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Captain Charles "Chuck" Yeager piloted the Bell X-1 (nicknamed "Glamorous Glennis") to Mach 1.06 (700 mph) at 43,000 feet, breaking the sound barrier for the first time in level flight.
