The Glamorous Glennis is thespecific Bell X-1 aircraft that, on October 14, 1947, became the first airplaneto officially break the sound barrier in level flight. Piloted by U.S. AirForce Capt. Chuck Yeager, the rocket-powered plane reached Mach 1.06 (about 700mph) at 43,000 feet.
The "Flying Bullet": Engineers modeled the fuselage directly after a .50-caliber machine gun bullet. They knew bullets could fly supersonically, so the 31-foot, streamlined body was designed to minimize drag and manage extreme forces. Distinctive Paint Job: The plane famously featured a bright "international orange" paint scheme (with white accents added later) to ensure it was highly visible against the sky and over the desert during flight tests. The Wings: It featured short, extremely strong, and unswept straight wings that were roughly 28 feet wide. Propulsion: Rather than a traditional jet engine, it was powered by a 6,000-pound-thrust XLR11 rocket engine (from Reaction Motors, Inc.) that burned a mixture of liquid oxygen and diluted alcohol.***PLEASE VIEW PHOTOS AND VIDEO!!***
