Offered here is a genuine Roman provincial bronze as struck at the imperial mint of Antioch on the Orontes (Roman Syria) during the 2nd century AD, in the age of Hadrian and Antoninus Pius — some eighteen to nineteen centuries ago.
Obverse: The laureate head of the Roman emperor faces right, his wreathed profile still bold despite the softening of nearly two thousand years of circulation. Traces of the original Latin inscription ring the flan, worn smooth by ancient hands.
Reverse: A large, proud SC — Senatus Consulto, "by decree of the Senate" — stands at the center, encircled by a finely rendered laurel wreath, its leaves and tie still clearly visible. This SC-in-wreath design is the signature reverse of Antiochene bronze coinage.
Specifications: Bronze as, approximately 11 grams. Antioch mint, Roman Syria. Circa 117–161 AD.
Condition: Fine, with an attractive, even chocolate-brown patina and natural earthen deposits settled into the recesses — original surfaces, never harshly cleaned. Honest circulation wear throughout; no corrosion, no tooling, no funny business. A solid, problem-free example of the type, with good heft in hand.
Provenance & guarantee: From an old collection; guaranteed authentic and unconditionally returnable if ever questioned.
A tangible piece of the Roman East — held, spent, and lost by someone living under the Caesars. Ships carefully packed with tracking.
