Authentic Roman Bronze Seal of Helmeted Mars (1st–3rd Century AD) 19mm Authentic

Authenticity NoticeThis artifact is certified authentic and will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and Provenance.

DetailsObject: Military Signet / SealCulture: Roman EmpireDate: Circa 1st–3rd Century ADMaterial: Bronze (Copper-alloy)Form: Heavy cylindrical seal with circular face depicting MarsSize: 19mmRegion: Roman Levant / Provincial Empire

OverviewA significant primary military artifact from the Roman Imperial period. This 19mm bronze seal depicts the helmeted profile of Mars, the Roman god of war. The deity is shown with his characteristic crested Galea (helmet), a symbol of martial prowess and divine protection over the Roman Legions. In the administrative life of a Roman encampment, seals of this type were essential for officers to authenticate pay records, military orders, and personal correspondence. The robust, cylindrical "drum" form allowed for high pressure when sealing wax or clay, ensuring a clear and authoritative impression.

Authenticity CheckThe artifact exhibits a superb, stable archaeological patina with a deep ebony-green surface and localized areas of authentic earthen mineralization. The strike of the deity remains bold and shows characteristic "softening" of the edges consistent with centuries of oxidation and use. The reverse of the drum displays heavy, mineralized "desert" sand deposits typical of artifacts recovered from the Roman East. No evidence of modern tool marks, machine-engraving, or artificial chemical staining.
