Antique c.1830 I & H Sorby 7/8" Wheelwright's Shell Auger– Circa 1827–1844
An exceptional piece of early 19th-century industrial history, this antique wheelwright's spoon bit(shell auger)was manufactured by the highly esteemed I & H(John & Henry)Sorby of Sheffield, England. Dating to circa 1830, this specialized edge tool bears the iconic Golden Fleece (hanging sheep) trademark, which was originally registered in 1791 and carried forward by John Sorby’s sons, John and Henry, after 1827.This is a rare, large-scale industrial specimen featuring an early flat rectangular tang that tapers to a distinctive V-shaped point—designed specifically for wedge-fitting into a traditional wooden T-handle or early wooden brace.Traditionally utilized by master wheelwrights for boring deep, straight, and true holes into heavy timber hub centres, this spoon auger is a beautiful testament to pre-Victorian blacksmithing and edge tool production.
