Antique Gillett's Lye "Eats Dirt" advertising pinback button, likely dating to around the turn of the 20th century. The front depicts a yellow and orange can of Gillett's 100% Lye against a black background, with the advertising slogan "Eats Dirt."The small lettering on the can identifies the E.W. Gillett Company Limited, a Canadian manufacturer based in Toronto.A collector-sale catalog identifies a closely matching Gillett's Lye pinback as dating from approximately 1896-1908.Because this example does not have a dated or printed backpaper, it is described more conservatively as circa 1900.Measures approx. 1" diameter.Extensive crazing/cracking with lifting and surface loss near upper edge, plus scratches/scuffs/discoloration. Reverse and pin hardware show oxidation/rust; pin/catch are present. Please review photos for condition. An unusual early Canadian advertising collectible for collectors of antique pinbacks, household-product advertising, lye and cleaning-product memorabilia, or E.W. Gillett advertising.
