Offered is an antique Gillett\'s High Grade Extract bottle from the E. W. Gillett Co. Ltd. of Chicago, Illinois.
The bottle features attractive raised embossing, including:
The center features Gillett\'s distinctive pictorial owl and crescent-moon trademark.
The side panels are embossed with the company and location information, including E. W. Gillett Co. Ltd. and Chicago U.S.A.
E. W. Gillett was a Chicago food-products manufacturer associated with flavoring extracts and other culinary products during the late 19th century. This bottle appears to represent the earlier E. W. Gillett company period, before later bottles bearing the Sherer-Gillett company name.
Based on the company identification, bottle construction and known examples, this example is believed to date approximately to the 1890s to early 1900s.
The exact flavor of extract originally sold in this particular bottle is unknown. Gillett produced different flavoring extracts, and the specific variety may originally have been identified by a paper label that is no longer present.
A great pictorial bottle for collectors of antique advertising, food and flavoring bottles, Chicago bottles, embossed glass, owl advertising, or late-19th-century Americana.
