Antique 1838 wood engraving titled "Southeastern View of the Wesleyan University, Middletown," by American historian and engraver John Warner Barber (1798-1885).
Published in Barber's Connecticut Historical Collections (New Haven & Hartford, 1838) — one of the first popular local history books printed in the U.S., illustrated throughout with Barber's own wood engravings of Connecticut towns and landmarks. This plate depicts Wesleyan University's original campus just seven years after the school's founding in 1831.
The engraving has been removed from the book and mounted on a green board, housed in a small period frame. Overall framed size: 5.75" x 6.5".
A handwritten research note is affixed to the backing, citing the source (Barber, Connecticut Historical Collections, New Haven, 1838 — plate on p. 510) and noting Wesleyan's 1831 founding date, along with a gift inscription reading "From FDNR — Xmas. 1973."
