1993 Orbital Sciences ACTS/TOS Space Shuttle Discovery Original Lithograph AR Hogan
Original vintage Orbital Sciences Corporation color lithograph depicting the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) and its Transfer Orbit Stage (TOS) being deployed from NASA Space Shuttle Discovery.
The artwork shows Discovery in Earth orbit with the ACTS/TOS payload separating from the Shuttle. Orbital Sciences Corporation branding appears prominently along the border.
This concept image is associated with NASA mission STS-51, launched aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on September 12, 1993. ACTS was deployed on the first day of the mission, and approximately 45 minutes later the attached Transfer Orbit Stage fired to place the experimental communications satellite into geosynchronous transfer orbit. This was the first use of the TOS booster from the Space Shuttle.
The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite was developed as an experimental NASA communications technology test bed, demonstrating advanced Ka-band satellite communications and other technologies that would influence later communications satellite systems.
Based on the mission represented, this lithograph dates to approximately 1993.
The reverse retains an original A.R. Hogan Writers Plus Newsroom address label along with a handwritten “Please Return Pix To!” notation. These markings provide particularly strong provenance showing that the lithograph was part of Hogan’s professional working collection rather than simply a later-acquired piece of NASA memorabilia.
Provenance: From the estate of NASA journalist Alfred Robert “AR” Hogan. The original Hogan address label and return notation remain attached to the reverse.
