1955 McCormick's Map of the World Spice Map 1st Edition Pictorial Advertising:
$149.00

McCormick & Company, Inc.

Baltimore, Maryland

1955 — Dated

Original large-format 1955 McCormick pictorial world spice map, produced as a colorful promotional and educational piece illustrating the global sources of spices, teas, coffees and flavoring products.

This dated 1955 edition appears to be the first issue of this particular large-format McCormick world spice-map design, which McCormick subsequently updated and reissued for many years.

The impressive map opens to approximately 33.4 × 22.9 inches and presents the world in a colorful double-hemisphere projection.

Throughout the map are locations associated with spices and other products, along with the routes of famous explorers including Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan and Sir Francis Drake.

The elaborate pictorial design includes:

  • National flags surrounding the map

  • Historic exploration routes

  • Sailing ships and other transportation

  • Decorative wind heads and sea creatures

  • Zodiac symbols

  • Compass rose

  • Moluccas / Spice Islands inset

  • Illustrations depicting harvesting of tea, coffee, vanilla and spices

  • McCormick/Schilling facilities in Baltimore, San Francisco and Southern California

The reverse contains “McCormick's Encyclopedia of Flavoring Extracts — Spices — Teas — Coffees” along with additional company and product information.

A wonderful piece of mid-century American advertising, food history, pictorial cartography and graphic design, as well as an attractive display piece in its own right.

Original 1955 McCormick publication — not a reproduction.

Sold exactly as pictured.
