Image & Historical Context
During the 1920s, discoveries across West Texas and the Panhandle sparked monumental gushers and frenzied drilling activity. Without modern blowout preventers, lightning strikes, static electricity, and friction sparks routinely ignited millions of cubic feet of gas and crude oil, creating catastrophic conflagrations that took days or weeks to smother with dynamite and steam.
This dramatic, museum-quality composition shows an immense wall of boiling black crude smoke and roaring flame towering thousands of feet into the sky. In the foreground, dwarfed by the sheer scale of the inferno, sits a prairie livestock windmill and cistern, field machinery, and scattered oilmen observing the devastation from the edge of the dirt road.
(The inverted digital positive scans shown in the listing photos are provided for visual reference to demonstrate image sharpness, detail, and tonal range; the physical item offered is the antique glass plate negative itself).
Physical Condition Assessment
Glass: Complete, structurally sound, and intact with no breaks, cracks, or repairs. Extreme border margins display light period edge chipping typical of camera plate holders and filing, completely isolated from the primary composition.
Emulsion Layer: Spectacular density, tonal graduation, and textural definition in the billowing smoke plumes and foreground machinery. Clean field with only minor, authentic edge silver mirroring and light handling friction along the extreme non-image rebate borders.
Envelope: The original printed brown newspaper production envelope is complete and intact, showing natural age-toning, soft handling wear, and dark period pencil notations consistent with 1920s newspaper archive files.
The glass plate negative measures 4 x 5In.
