From our huge collection: Large 1874 dated Indian Wars Rare Chewing Tobacco drum, keg or caddy with label & stamps Custer era. "Sunbeam Chewing Tobacco" "Monroe Michigan" (Monroe was Custer's home town; and Sunbeam his pet name for his wife Libby ~ perhaps a coincidence?) This is quite rare, in fact, the only one from 1870s I've ever seen in six decades of collecting! The US Revenue tax stamp is The series of 1868, but is hand written dated in ink "1874" and a signature (I can only make out the year 1874...and not month or day). The revenue tax stamp say "10 Lbs." however, on the top lid it has stenciled writing, possibly indicating weight. This tobacco caddy is exactly what the Sutlers and Post Traders would have purchased and on hand to sell the the soldiers chewing tobacco at the frontier forts such as Fort Lincoln, Ft Rice etc. and while out campaigning. They would have had tobacco caddies just like this one to sell chewing tobacco to soldiers on the Black Hills Expedition and Powder River camps. It is very possible that the Post Traders in Dakota Territory purchased some of their tobacco from Jas G. McBride, Michigan Tobacco Works in Monroe, as I found records that they sold their products in far away Atchinson, Kansas in July of 1875. Museum quality. See all photos.
