This is an original, privately altered Bacon Bag Insert to the M1874 Haversacks, designed to fit models with one and two-button closures. This item likely holds historical significance during the Indian Wars (1866-97), most of these bags were often tossed. With its military-themed design, this altered insert would be a unique and sought-after piece for collectors not having a bacon (food) bag in their haversack. An interested in original period items from this era.
