This is an 1861-1865 Civil War cdv/card by Louis Prang from the series "PROMINENT CHARACTERS, MEN OF THE TIMES
Louis Prang etched and issued these scarce cdv/cards during the Civil War 1861-1865.
This is from a series of 164 known cdv/cards (including variations) featuring popular Civil War generals, soldiers, presidents, presidents wives, other prominent characters of the civil war era and before issued by artist Louis Prang, father of the "Christmas Card". Louis Prang is also famous for his chromolithographs of Civil War battle scenes and lithographs of civil war generals, soldiers, presidents, etc.
L. Prang is also famous for his extreme "likeness" on his portraits as shown in this series of "Prominent Characters". His accuracy is incredible!
The "Prominent Characters, Men of the Times" series was previously designated W50 & W51 in the ACC. This is the oldest series in the ACC. PSA has finally started labeling these by the correct series "Prominent Characters".
Many from this series are quite rare (1 or 2 known) because of limited production and some lesser known soldiers. These come in 3 different styles: 1) Portrait in Oval 2) Green Border 3) White Background.
