Original antique photograph believed to show the excavation and construction of the original Pennsylvania Station (Penn Station) in New York City, circa 1905.The photograph depicts a massive excavation site in Manhattan, with deep trenches, exposed earth and rock, temporary construction tracks, wooden support structures, workers, and surrounding commercial buildings. An elevated railway structure is visible along the right side of the image. The scene is consistent with the extensive excavation undertaken by the Pennsylvania Railroad for its monumental Manhattan terminal.Construction of the original Pennsylvania Station began in 1904 and was completed in 1910. The project involved clearing multiple city blocks and excavating deep below street level to accommodate the station and its underground railroad infrastructure.
