During World War II, the United States military severely restricted the use of raw leather and specialized metals for domestic use, diverting them to combat gear. When the U.S. Army Special Services contracted top sports companies to supply baseball gear for soldiers overseas to boost morale, civilian gear was built using rugged, military-grade surplus.
