Squadron History - Hat in the Ring
Activated in 1917, the 94th Aero Squadron became the first American pursuit squadron to see combat on the Western Front. The squadron's famous insignia— Uncle Sam's hat thrown into the ring —symbolized the United States' entry into the war.
Flying the SPAD XIII , the 94th produced some of America's earliest air aces, most notably Eddie Rickenbacker , the United States' top ace of the war. The squadron amassed dozens of aerial victories and helped establish the foundation of American fighter aviation.
The Hat in the Ring emblem remains one of the most recognizable and enduring symbols in U.S. military aviation history.
