An original 8.5x6.5" vintage photo from a large collection of American Expeditionary Force (AEF) photos we acquired from the estate of a collector. Photos of this set are almost all labelled "US OFFICIAL", indicating that the U.S. Signal Corps is the most likely origin. Photo is extremely rare. Professionally packaged in a rigid mailer for safe delivery.
Photo Overview
This photograph depicts a somber scene of a military cemetery with wooden crosses marking the graves, situated in an open field. The lack of a visible city or town in the background, along with the barren landscape, suggests it might be located in a rural area that saw significant conflict during World War I. The tracks in the foreground could indicate proximity to a battlefield resupply line, suggesting this might be a temporary burial site for soldiers.
World War I saw many battles with significant casualties, and temporary burial sites such as this were common near the front lines. These sites often reflect the urgent need to quickly and respectfully bury fallen soldiers during intense clashes like those on the Western Front. The wooden crosses were often used for preliminary identification before more permanent arrangements could be made post-war.
Condition: Good to fair vintage condition. This antique photo is on extremely old, somewhat fragile paper, and likely has age spots, tears, surface flaking, or other age related blemishes. Please see photos for detailed scans of both sides.
