This is an incredibly rare piece of American journalism history: an authentic, original Chicago Herald and Examiner newspaper vendor apron. This heavy-duty canvas apron was worn by my grandfather and other street-corner newsboys (\"newsies\") or newsstand agents during the peak of Chicago\'s fierce 1920s and 1930s media wars. Because the Chicago Herald and Examiner (owned by media tycoon William Randolph Hearst) ceased publication under this name in August 1939, this apron can be definitively dated between 1918 and 1939. I suspect closer to the earlier date because my grandfather was born in 1909.
The graphics, \"Read The CHICAGO HERALD and EXAMINER\" font remains incredibly bold, crisp, and vibrant. The orange-gold paint shows remarkably well for its age.
The deep navy fabric is structurally sound with solid stitching although the seams have fraying on the back. The lower change/coin pockets are fully intact.
The neck loop and waist tie-backs are present and in good condition. There are some light stains toward the top. See photos for details on wear, light storage dusting or character marks from its historical street use.
This is a museum-quality display piece perfect for a Chicago historian, print media enthusiast, or vintage advertising collector. It would look incredible framed or hung on a wall!
