Authentic-style vintage Zulu handwoven lidded basket from South Africa, traditionally known as an ukhamba.
Beautifully constructed using the traditional coiled basketry technique associated with KwaZulu-Natal, with tightly wrapped natural fibers forming a rounded vessel and fitted woven lid. The basket features alternating natural cream and deep brown vertical panels, creating a striking geometric design.
Traditional Zulu basket makers commonly use ilala palm fiber over a grass core, with natural materials and dyes producing the distinctive earth-tone coloration. Similar tightly woven vessels historically served functional purposes including the storage and serving of traditional beer, while fine examples are now highly collectible as African fiber art.
Approximate dimensions:
10–10½” tall including lid/finial
Approximately 11” diameter at widest point
Condition: Vintage pre-owned condition with age-related wear and natural irregularities from handmade construction. There is visible wear/fraying to the small woven finial/handle at the top of the lid. Please review all photographs carefully, including detailed photos of the lid, interior and underside, as they form an important part of the condition description.
A beautiful example of traditional African basketry and an excellent decorative or collectible piece.
