This beautiful Royal Doulton "Invitation" fine bone china figurine (model HN2170) is a fantastic, early-production piece representing the height of mid-century European ceramic design. Masterfully modeled by the legendary designer Peggy Davies during a brief first-era production run from 1956 to 1959, the sculpture depicts a young woman poised in a gracefully flowing, multi-tiered pink ballgown, her off-the-shoulder bodice accented by a singular blue floral corsage. In her right hand, she delicately extends an ornate, hand-painted fan rendered in striking cobalt blue and cream hues, mirroring the gentle, windswept movement of her crinoline skirt. The artistry is highlighted by meticulous hand-painted details, including delicate facial features, a soft blush to the cheeks, and an intricate floral hairpiece nestled into her upswept brunette hair. The base features the fully detailed, early-style underglaze green backstamp, complete with the 1955 copyright registration (COPR. 1955) and the comprehensive block of international patent registration numbers (Rd. No. 878033, 34543, 7306, and 444/55). This specific layout securely confirms its late 1950’s age range, complete with the hand-painted green "X" studio artisan mark belonging to the individual decorator at the Burslem works in Staffordshire.
