Beautiful vintage handmade pottery ashtray from Mohawk Pottery of the Six Nations of the Grand River (Ontario, Canada). This studio was founded in the mid-20th century by Elda “Bun” Smith and Oliver M. Smith as part of the important revival of traditional Haudenosaunee (Iroquois/Mohawk) pottery traditions that had largely been lost after European contact. The piece features a rich reddish-brown earthenware body with deeply incised geometric decoration. The center has a bold multi-pointed star or sunburst motif with radiating lines and angular patterns, surrounded by a circular border of leaf- or feather-like designs. The rim is gently lobed/scalloped (ideal for resting cigarettes or as a decorative catch-all). The surface has a matte to semi-matte finish that highlights the hand-carved details.Markings (base):
Clearly incised “MOHAWK POTTERY” in an arc with “P. 83”. Visible potter’s fingerprints and throwing marks on the underside, consistent with studio pottery 4.5 inches in diameter.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs noted. Natural variations and surface character from the handmade process and age. Please examine the photos carefully for exact detail.
