Wonderful vintage hand-crafted leather dromedary camel, approximately 35cm high to the top of the head.The camel is constructed from brown leather over a stuffed/form-built body, with extensive visible hand stitching throughout. It has a faded red saddle, long natural fibre fringe, simple reins and bridle, applied eyes and beautifully aged leather with plenty of genuine patina.The style is characteristic of mid-20th-century tourist and folk-art pieces produced in Egypt and elsewhere in North Africa and the Middle East.Comparable surviving examples are frequently identified as Egyptian and date from around the 1960s–1970s. Similar pieces were also produced in Morocco and India, so as this example has no visible maker\'s mark or country stamp, I would describe the origin as likely Egyptian / North African rather than claim it definitively.A particularly characterful example with a wonderfully primitive handmade quality. The irregular stitching, aged leather, rope work and heavily fringed saddle give it a strong folk-art appearance.Approximate height: 35cm to top of head.Vintage condition with considerable age-related wear, rubbing, marks, fading and patina to the leather and saddle. The fringe is aged and uneven as expected.
