Each bird is carved from dense dark hardwood and set into the bookend: the head a wedge, the beak a hook, the body a stack of facets that catch the light the way a cubist drawing does and showcase the modernist Art Deco style. The claws are scored, one by one. The eyes are red glass, set in, and they are what the pair is remembered by.
The bird and the two boards are three pieces of wood, fitted together. That join is the craft. They face each other, felt under the bases, heavy enough for a short row of books or a desk that wants a still bird at each end. They sit well in a classic, eclectic, Art Deco, dark academia, mid-century modern, rustic, farmhouse or high-end library interior.
