Vintage Eberhard Faber Jack and the Beanstalk No. 174 Coloring Set for the Young Artist, containing eight wood-cased colored pencils in its original illustrated display package.
This is a particularly interesting variation of the Eberhard Faber fairy-tale coloring sets because the package incorporates a fold-out easel stand on the reverse, allowing the opened box to stand upright for display. The easel remains present and functional.
The wonderfully illustrated package tells the Jack and the Beanstalk story across several panels. The front shows Jack climbing the enormous beanstalk toward the castle in the clouds. When opened and extended, additional artwork appears, including the castle above the clouds and Jack confronting the giant.
The package is marked:
JACK AND THE BEANSTALK – No. 174
EBERHARD FABER – NEW YORK
COLORING SET FOR THE YOUNG ARTIST
FOR MAP COLORING, SKETCHING, SCHOOL ART WORK
8 PERMANENT COLORS
MADE IN U.S.A.
All 8 colored pencils are present.
The side of the box carries the same Eberhard Faber patent information seen on other period display boxes:
U.S.A. BOX PATS. NOS. 1,165,612 AND 1,631,595 – OTHER PATS. PEND.
Patent No. 1,631,595 was issued in 1927, so the packaging cannot predate that year. Based on the graphics, construction and related Eberhard Faber sets, this example appears consistent with a late 1920s to 1930s production date.
The box remains quite attractive with strong period graphics and good original color. There is normal age-related edge and corner wear, light rubbing, small marks, minor staining/discoloration and some fraying to the paper-covered cardboard. The sliding components remain intact, and the rear fold-out easel still opens and supports the package as intended. The bottom tab is torn in two places but is still strong enough to support the easel. The pencils show varying amounts of prior use.
No restoration or repairs have been done.
Please review all photographs carefully for exact condition.
A great piece for collectors of Eberhard Faber, antique colored pencils, fairy-tale advertising, Jack and the Beanstalk memorabilia, vintage school supplies, illustrated packaging or early display boxes.
