Elegant vintage African Baule maternity figure (mother and child) from the Ivory Coast. Standing a substantial 21.25" tall, this finely carved hardwood sculpture depicts a seated mother nursing her child while elevated on a traditional Baule openwork stool.
The piece showcases the exceptional refinement Baule carvers are celebrated for: a highly detailed, deeply ridged coiffure, a serene facial expression, and extensive, delicate keloid scarification patterns across the neck, torso, and back. It's finished in a beautiful deep black-brown aged patina, with natural lighter highlights revealing the rich wood grain beneath.
Baule sculpture is among the most studied and collected traditions in African art — known for its refined, dignified forms and careful attention to coiffure and scarification detail (see Susan Vogel's Baule: African Art, Western Eyes for further reading on the tradition).
A sophisticated statement piece that brings a high-end gallery presence to a Mid-Century Modern credenza, console table, or eclectic collector's space.
