Beautiful vintage Suk Bong Do-Yae Co. Korean celadon ewer and cup set, documented as model SB 867 in the company’s original 1983 catalog.
Made in Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do, Korea, an area historically associated with Korean ceramics, the set features a traditional pale celadon glaze decorated with graceful cranes and clouds.
The unusually sculptural ewer features a double-gourd form with a long upswept pouring spout, twisted handle, applied loop and removable pierced stopper.
Set includes:
* 1 celadon ewer/decanter
* 1 removable stopper
* 5 matching cups
* Original fitted presentation box with red satin interior
* Original 1983 Suk Bong Do-Yae Co. catalog, which pictures this exact set and identifies it as SB 867
The ewer measures approximately 9.25 inches tall with stopper installed.
The original catalog identifies the manufacturer as:
SUK BONG DO-YAE CO.
Ohhak-ri, Buknae-myeon, Yeoju-kun
Kyeng Gi-do, Korea
The surviving period catalog provides particularly nice provenance: the SB 867 set is illustrated in its original configuration with the same ewer, stopper and five cups.
Please note that someone previously handwritten “Japanese Tea Set” on the exterior of the presentation box. This identification is incorrect. The manufacturer’s original catalog and labeling establish the set as Korean, manufactured by Suk Bong Do-Yae Co.
Vintage condition with age-related wear to the presentation box and catalog. Please examine all photographs carefully for the condition of the individual ceramic pieces.
An attractive and unusually well-documented example of vintage Korean celadon, especially desirable with its complete five-cup service, original fitted box and original 1983 manufacturer’s catalog identifying the exact model.
