This is a stunning Royal Doulton plate with a Shreve & Company sterling silver rim. The plate itself has wonderful decoration of Japanese musicians, male and female (I think the woman is technically a Geisha ) plus geometric and floral designs typical of the Japanese aesthetic style. From my research, it appears this plate was made in 1915, which is consistent with the Shreve sterling rim. Shreve & Company was said to have developed this technique shortly after the 1906 earthquake -- they had some fine china plates that had some damage on the edges from being shaken in the quake, and silversmiths that needed work so a new style was born. Such is the legend, anyway but Shreve & Co. made nearly all the silver rimmed plates that I saw in over 20 years as a silver dealer in San Francisco.
Note that the silver rim and plate are both in excellent condition, looking little if ever used. The lighting in my photographs makes the silver look dark, but it is bright and shiny as it should be, with hand engraved decoration.Marks as shown in the last pictures for both the china and silver. Please ask if you have any questions.
Shipped carefully packed and insured, of course.
