This tree, a California Live Oak once stood at 26 Main Street in Jackson, California, an early Gold Rush town in front of Louis Tellier's Saloon. From 1851-55 ten men were hanged on this tree by Frontier Justice. In 1855 a large group of Mexicans decided to rob the Rancharia Hotel; they rifled thru the pockets of many guests, then murdered many of them. They also got $10,000 from the Hotel safe...About 30 of them met quick justice in neighboring Amador, three of them were hanged from this tree in Jackson including the one shown in this 1850's engraving of a Dag photo taken by D. A. Plecker. Rafael Escobar met his bitter end in August 1855...the engraving incorrectly says 1856.VTG 1926-40's RPPC Postcard~1850's ENGRAVING~"HANGMAN'S TREE"~Jackson CAL
