Uruguay: Medal for the War with Paraguay 1865-1869 withOriginal Award Document. Very scarce iron cross awarded to Uruguayan 2ndlieutenant Dr.(?) Nicanes (?) Quenedo, with a silver sun suspension forparticipation in the War of the Triple Alliance against Paraguay. The medal wasauthorized by a decree of 4 April 1891, more than 20 years after the war (seeRoss, Robert L. and Stahl, Alan M. From a Thankful Nation: Latin AmericanMedals & Orders in the Robert L. Ross Collection (2014) pp. 659-660;Gillingham, Harrold E. South American Decorations and War Medals (1932)p. 164-166). The very large award document measures ca. 21 ½ x 11 ½ inches, andis in very fine condition, with a few old folds. The cross is in better thanvery fine condition, with two small rust spots on the reverse; on the originalribbon with fork suspension. Examples of the cross with an intact original sun suspension,ribbon and original award document are very scarce.
