The Rice Murder Case
In 1900, New York lawyer Albert T. Patrick conspired with a valet to murder the elderly millionaire William Marsh Rice (the founder of Rice University) using chloroform. Patrick\'s goal was to steal Rice\'s massive fortune using a forged will.
Patrick was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death. His sentence was later commuted to life in prison, which he served at Sing Sing.
After a 12-year legal and public relations battle funded by his family, New York Governor John A. Dix granted Patrick a full pardon in late November 1912, and he was released.
Then in 1913 went out west to work at Golden Cycle Mining Co. Following his release, Patrick needed to rebuild his life and career. In 1913, he immediately jumped into industrial business promotion. Patrick’s brother-in-law was John T. Milliken. Milliken was the principal owner of the Golden Cycle Mining Company, a gold operation located in the Cripple Creek Mining District of Colorado
