Neal White (1947–2024) Vintage 1974 Gelatin Silver Photograph Masked Figure in Doorway Signed Front and Back

A striking and wonderfully enigmatic vintage black-and-white gelatin silver photograph by American photographer Neal White (1947–2024), signed and dated 1974.

The photograph depicts a solitary figure standing in a doorway, wearing striped trousers, a loose jacket, and an oversized, roughly fashioned smiling head or mask, apparently made from papier-mâché.

The figure's stillness, the exaggerated features of the mask, and the dramatically angled open door create an atmosphere that is simultaneously playful, theatrical, and slightly unsettling.

Although the mask suggests Halloween imagery, the actual circumstances of the photograph are unknown. White's composition transforms an unusual encounter into an image with a distinctly surreal quality.

Photograph and presentation

• Original vintage black-and-white gelatin silver photograph.

• Image approximately 7¾ × 7¾ inches, square format.

• Surface-mounted on rust-colored presentation board measuring approximately 14 × 18 inches, portrait orientation.

• Pencil signed and dated “Neal White 1974” beneath the image at lower right.

• Signed again on the markings and provenance

The reverse retains Neal White's original photographer's credit stamp:

“CREDIT — Photograph By NEAL M. WHITE — San Francisco — All Rights Reserved.”

The stamp also contains spaces for recording negative and print information, completed by hand. The negative notation appears to indicate October 1974, and the print notation December 1974.

Beneath the credit information is Neal's handwritten signature. The stamp also bears the wording “Tip Top Moving Picture & Novelty Co.”, a name used by White in his photographic work.

These original studio markings provide particularly interesting documentation of the photograph's production and its place within White's early photographic practice.
