This unusual item of military memorabilia is a pocket phrase book made for American Legion veterans returning to France in 1927, the “Second A.E.F.” pilgrimage to Paris. Within a few months, this item will be a century in age.
Description
Original The Soldiers’ French Phrase Book, special edition presented to the American Legion on the occasion of its Ninth Annual Convention, held at Paris, France, September 19-23, 1927, “with the compliments of Felt & Tarrant Mfg. Co., Chicago.”
The text descends from the phrase books issued to doughboys in 1918. This printing went to the veterans who sailed back to France for the 1927 convention. It is not a reprint.
Inside: a pronunciation guide with phonetic respellings, then everyday sentences for greetings, directions, meals and more, with the English on the left and the French plus pronunciation on the right.
Details: Soft-cover wraps, rounded corners, pocket size (about 5.5 × 4.5 in.). Gray cover, orange-toned interior pages.
Condition: Used, with age toning, a staple binding, and soft edges. First double page has come loose from binding. Paper has yellowed throughout. Please see photos, which are part of the description.
