💎 Description

A second Alabama diamond wood specimen with a distinctly warmer palette than most material from this locality — mustard yellow and gold mineral zones sit alongside muted grey-purple areas across a richly textured botryoidal surface, all anchored on a cream to tan layered matrix. The surface has the characteristic fine crystalline coverage of brilliant wood but reads here in earth tones rather than the silvery metallic character seen in some examples, making it a visually distinct piece in the hand.

Alabama diamond wood dates to the Late Cretaceous, roughly 70–100 million years ago, when much of present-day Alabama lay beneath or adjacent to a shallow inland sea. Trees from ancient coastal forests fell and were buried in marine and deltaic sediments. Over geological time, mineral-rich groundwater percolated through the buried wood, replacing organic material cell by cell — a process called permineralization. The result is structurally preserved wood transformed into stone, with the distinctive botryoidal surface and metallic sheen that give brilliant wood its name developing from the specific mineral chemistry of Alabama’s Cretaceous deposits.

⸻

🌍 Composition

• Petrified wood (trade names: brilliant wood, Alabama diamond wood) — original Late Cretaceous woody structure replaced by silica (SiO₂) and associated minerals via permineralization; yellow-gold and grey-purple zones on botryoidal surface, cream to tan layered matrix

• Natural fossil specimen from Alabama, USA

⸻

✨ Features

• Warm mustard yellow and gold mineral zones — less common than the silvery variant

• Grey-purple areas provide cool contrast against the warm ground

• Dense botryoidal surface texture characteristic of Alabama diamond wood

• Cream to tan layered matrix visible at base

• Compact cabinet specimen at 1.6 inches
