Vintage 1938 L.C. Smith & Corona Sterling portable manual typewriter in its uncommon original burgundy finish. Serial number 2A42163.
This striking prewar Sterling features glass keytops, chrome trim, a Pica typeface (10 characters per inch), basket shift, and a removable tabulator system. It has been carefully serviced, tested, and fitted with a fresh black/red ribbon. It types well and produces a good imprint, as shown in the type sample and operating video.
SERVICE AND TESTING PERFORMED:
• Replaced the carriage drawband
• Cleaned and flushed the type basket
• Cleaned the type slugs
• Polished the typebars
• Flushed and tested the escapement
• Cleaned and lightly lubricated the carriage rails
• Cleaned and lightly lubricated the margin stops
• Replaced a weak carriage-return-lever spring
• Replaced a stripped screw in the right platen knob
• Cleaned the platen and feed rollers
• Tested the margin-release mechanism
• Tested the tabulator system
• Cleaned the bell-ringer pivot; bell rings properly
• Removed surface rust where present
• Removed most exterior panels for cleaning inside and out
• Cleaned the glass keytops
• Polished the exterior panels and carriage-return lever
• Installed reusable metal ribbon spools with a fresh black/red ribbon
TEST RESULTS:
• Typeface: Pica, 10 CPI
• Platen hardness: 90.6 Shore A average from six readings
• Carriage draw tension: 507 grams
• Shift alignment tested
• Black and red ribbon settings tested
The original platen is firm due to age, but the machine feeds paper properly and produces a good imprint. Using two sheets of paper is recommended to provide additional cushioning while typing.
COSMETIC CONDITION:
The original burgundy finish presents beautifully overall. There is a scuff on top of the ribbon cover that is visible in person but does not show prominently in every photograph. Additional minor wear may be present consistent with a typewriter manufactured in 1938. Please examine all photographs and the video for condition.
The rubber feet remain pliable and are in good condition.
CASE:
Includes its original hard carrying case in good functional condition. The case has been cleaned inside and out. A bent retaining pin on one mounting bracket was reshaped and reconnected, and the case now functions properly. Five removable tab stops are included. Also included is a printed copy of the 1930s Corona user manual for operating instructions and reference.
