Restored prewar Osmia 436 oversized button filler celluloid 18k flex OB nib:
$700.00

For your consideration is a beautifully restored, prewar Osmia 436, a very rare oversized German fountain pen from the 1930s, fitted with a magnificent 18-karat gold No. 6 oblique broad (OB) flex nib.The 436 represents the largest format in Osmia’s 43x series, combining elegant German styling, an unusual button-filling mechanism, and an exceptionally attractive transparent red ink window. This example is finished in glossy black celluloid with gold-filled trim and retains its distinctive original barrel markings.THE NIB — 18K GOLD NO. 6 OBLIQUE BROADThe standout feature is undoubtedly the substantial 18-karat Osmia No. 6 nib. It offers a wonderfully soft, expressive writing experience, combining the natural line variation of a vintage oblique broad with considerable additional flexibility.The nib has recently received further adjustment and careful smoothing. It is now exceptionally smooth, with a glassy feel on paper, while retaining its original oblique character and excellent line variation.Writing characteristics, measured approximately:* Fine cross-strokes: 0.4 mm
* Normal-pressure downstrokes: 0.8 mm
* Controlled flex: up to 2.0 mm note frequent maximum flexing can cause permanent damage especially as this is an 18k nibUnlike many flexible nibs, this OB produces beautiful natural line variation even without deliberate flex. It is particularly enjoyable for everyday cursive, expressive handwriting, and ornamental lettering.The nib bears Osmia’s distinctive diamond emblem, No. 6 designation, and 18 CAR hallmark. Its 18-karat composition suggests production for the French export market, where higher-purity gold nibs were customary.Please see the accompanying writing sample demonstrating its range of writing styles and line variation.FILLING SYSTEM — FULLY RESTOREDThis is an unusual oversized button-filler incorporating a transparent lower barrel and an opaque upper barrel housing the sac and pressure bar.The filling mechanism has been mechanically restored, including:* New ink sac
* Replacement pressure bar
* Fully operational button-filling mechanism
* Tested for proper filling and writing performanceThe pen takes a generous fill of approximately 1.5 mL, requiring roughly eight button presses for a complete fill.The large original ebonite feed delivers excellent ink flow, even during expressive writing and controlled flex.For optimal performance and preservation, I recommend traditional, relatively dry fountain pen inks such as Pelikan 4001.CONDITION — RESTORED, VERY GOOD VINTAGE COSMETICSThe black celluloid retains an attractive gloss, with ordinary surface scratches and handling marks consistent with its considerable age.Of particular interest is the large transparent ruby-red ink window, which retains remarkably good clarity. The internal filling components are visible through the window, giving this model a distinctive appearance.There are two light scratches on the ink window, intentionally left untouched to preserve the original material. Neither is especially noticeable during ordinary handling.The gold-colored clip and cap bands remain attractive, with age-appropriate wear. The unusual barrel imprint, featuring a simple OSMIA marking, is clearly legible, as is the 436 model designation. Near the button is a distinctive wavy-line motif accompanied by a GERMANY imprint.Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description.HISTORICAL INTERESTThe Osmia 436 is an uncommon survivor of prewar German fountain pen manufacturing. Its oversized proportions, unusually large oblique nib, and distinctive filling construction make it especially interesting to collectors of early Osmia, Soennecken, Pelikan, and other European writing instruments.An original period French Osmia catalog illustration identifying the extra-large 33x/43x format is included among the photographs for historical reference.SHIPPINGCarefully packed and shipped from Charlottesville, Virginia, USA.International buyers are welcome through available international shipping options or USPS First Class International at a reasonable price. This is a fully restored, functional vintage writing instrument, ready to be enjoyed by its next owner.
