This listing is for a rare, 2-lb rough Oregon Coast sard agate (a dark brown / brownish-black variety of chalcedony). This may very well be the largest sard agate I’ve ever found, as pummeling waves or river erosion tend to heavily erode agates into smaller pieces. This sard agate weighs just over 2 pounds and is relatively smooth (no jagged edges) from stream water erosion. Completely untouched, this is a prime specimen for a lapidary artist or display as is within your own collection as an agate that stands out from all the others. A few small pockets of druzy crystals exists on side of this piece.

Agates are unique because it is a mineral that’s never been able to be replicated in a laboratory. Agates develop over millions of years in metamorphic, igneous & volcanic rocks with a precise combination of time, water and various compositions of mineral deposits due to Oregon’s rich & violent volcanic history. Agates are mainly composed of varying amounts of chalcedony, silica & quartz. The many different colors that agates can have are attributed to small amounts of additional trace minerals & impurities that made their way into the agate cavity (by seeping groundwater) during its formation; ie: copper, iron oxides, sulfur, moganite, etc.
The average age of Oregon agates ranges between 13 & 25 million years.
The ornamental use of agates goes back to Ancient Greece, and was worn by Greek warriors and the use of polished agates date back to the 3rd millennium BCE in the Indus Valley. The name it has today was given by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher and naturalist, who discovered the stone along the shores of the Drillo River in Sicily.
