Original “This Indenture” mortgage deed dated July 20, 1863 (Philadelphia, PA).
Parties: John Griner (grantor/borrower) and George Eney, attorney at law (mortgagee).
Property: two-story brick messuage/tenement on the east side of Chatham Street, about 59 ft 2¼ in south of Green Street; frontage ~14 ft 2¼ in; depth ~50 ft 5¾ in (full metes and bounds written in the body of the deed).
Authentication details:
Three U.S. Civil War 1st-Issue revenue stamps affixed: (2) 50¢ blue and (1) 40¢ orange, manuscript/pen canceled.
Blind embossed seal, bold ink signatures, and notary/acknowledgment by Peter Hay, Alderman.
Docketed on the reverse (“Mortgage,” satisfaction notations, file numbers, etc.).
Size: about 22" x 17.5" (unfolded).
Condition: clean and legible with expected tri-folds; light edge/corner wear, a couple tiny fold separations, small ink blot on reverse, and normal toning—overall very good for 1863.
Great piece for collectors of Philadelphia history, Civil War tax/revenue documents, or antique real-estate deeds.
