Rare 1839 U.S. Model 1833 Dragoon Cavalry Saber N.P. Ames Springfield Sword JH:
$850.00

Up for sale is a 100% guaranteed authentic, highly coveted U.S. Model 1833 Dragoon Saber, manufactured by the legendary N.P. Ames of Springfield, Massachusetts. This historically significant weapon represents America’s very first official cavalry-style blade, famously issued to the newly formed 1st and 2nd U.S. Dragoons during the Antebellum and Seminole War eras.

The ricasso features a spectacularly clear, beautifully preserved hand-engraved early script maker\'s mark that reads:

• \"N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield / 1839\"

Directly below the script is the crisp, deep stamped ordnance inspector mark \"JH\" for John Hannis, confirming official government acceptance.

Physical Specifications

• Overall Length: 39 1/2\"

• Blade Length: 34\"

• Total Weight: 2 lbs 4 oz

Condition Report

Please review the high-resolution photographs carefully, as they serve as the ultimate visual condition guide for this antique weapon.

• Blade: Retains a striking, dark grey aged patina consistent with over 180 years of history. There is honest surface oxidation present, but the metal remains solid with no deep, destructive pitting. The blade is straight and maintains excellent structural integrity.

• Hilt / Guard: The brass branch guard handles and Phrygian-style pommel cap are structurally secure and tight to the tang. The brass exhibits a gorgeous, completely undisturbed dark bronze patina that collectors highly prize.

• Grip: The underlying ribbed wood handle is completely intact, solid, and structurally sound. Please note that the original leather wrap and twisted brass wire have worn away entirely over time, exposing the honest wood beneath.

• Scabbard: Not included.

Collector\'s Note

Early Ames swords marked \"Springfield\" (before production shifted focus to Chicopee and Cabotville) with clear, intact cursive engravings are increasingly difficult to find. This is a premier investment-grade relic for serious collectors of early American military heritage, Indian Wars, or Mexican-American War weaponry.
