Here's a difficult Colorado flat top that doesn't turn up every day: an originalWalter's Premium Pilsener Beer 12 oz flat-top can,USBC 144-17, from theWalter Brewing Co., Pueblo, Colorado.
This is a genuinely scarce Walter's variation. The 2001 BCCA Supplement pictured this exact design as144-17, and specialist Beer Cans Plus has described 144-17 as a“very rare can”and particularly difficult to find in high grade.
Classic late-1950s Walter's graphics with metallic-gold background, cream center panel, bold red scriptWalter's,Premium Pilsener BEER, the small Walter portrait/logo, and the wonderful“Mountain High in Quality”slogan along the bottom.
CONDITION:Definitely an off-grade example, but one with a surprisingly strong display face.
There is extensiverust, oxidation, scratching, spotting and litho wearthroughout the can. The metallic-gold areas have considerable oxidation, particularly around the upper body and seam, and the seam itself has heavy rust. Both ends are heavily oxidized/rusted.
The original flat top istop opened with two old-style church-key punctures. Bottom remains intact but is heavily oxidized.
Despite all of this, one face retains remarkably good shelf presence. The red Walter's lettering remains bright, the cream field and red BEER are strong and easily readable, the Walter logo is visible, and the“Mountain High in Quality”slogan survives nicely. The body also remains recognizably cylindrical without the severe crushing that often makes an off-grade can difficult to display.
This isnot a condition can—it's an opportunity to put a genuinely difficultWalter's 144-17on the shelf without paying the substantial price commanded by high-grade examples.
A great filler or placeholder for the seriousColorado, Pueblo, Walter Brewing or flat-top beer-can collector.
