ANTIQUE 19TH CENTURY "NEUE OVALE
SALON-SPIELKARTEN" OVAL PLAYING
CARDS IN ORIGINAL BOX
Available for purchase is a RARE set of antique 19th-century playing cards titled "Neue Oval Salon-Spielkarten" (New Oval Salon Playing Cards). They were designedby the famous German illustrator Fedor Alexis Flinzer (1832-1911), published by Alexander Twietmeyer in Leipzig, Germany, and printed at the playing card factory of Friedrich Günthel, also in Leipzig. This particular set is interesting in that the Twietmeyer name was removed from the top lid of the box and replaced by a paper label from the Adler Printing House in Amsterdam. However, they did not remove the Twietmeyer name that appears almost hidden on the Jack of Spades card, so it's clear that Adler didn't print them.The cards have a unique oval shape, supposedly designedto be easier to shuffle, hold, and sort than traditional rectangular cards. The set features ornate chromolithograph court cards with thematic costume designs.These, and also the aces, have borders formed of small suit-marks. The backs are printed with a small blue hexagonal pattern and the edges have gold gilt. The set is housed in its original oval shape box. All 52 cards are included in this complete set. I've seen some sets that also have an extra explanatory card or label that details the advantages of oval cards, but this set does not have this extra card or label. Each card measures about 4 1/6" (103 mm) long and 2 11/16" (68 mm) wide. I purchased this set of cards at a recent estate sale. This set is guaranteed to be an original antique card set and NOT a modern reproduction.Please check out my positive response and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.Condition of this antique card set is VERY GOOD. As I mentioned previously, the set is complete with all 52 cards (13 in each suit). A few of the cards have some foxing (light brown spots) and there is some foxing on the inside bottom of the box.
