Queen Alexandra's Gift Book, 1908-Used As A Royalty Scrapbook,Coronations
w/torn aged and brittle dust jacket.11.25"x 9"
The former owner used the book for contemporary accountsof both the coronation of George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The title page may have been covered up or may have been removed. The scrapbook entries are fragile and I'd have to ruin them to uncover the title page. I think this is the 1908 edition as it seems the 1909 printing was the "Christmas Gift Book", which is the same but with a Christmas color cover. It contains genealogical charts from both eras, one that shows Queen Victoria "at the reins"showing all of her offspring and their marriages to many if not all, of the remaining royal houses of Europe. That was her strategy, pump out babies and seed every royal family left on the continent. She enjoyed sex very much so that part worked out, the actual children not so muchand the actual reality of world politics doomed her plans. For example Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, who instigated the largestloss of life in war in the history of the world was her doting Nephew "Willie".Charming 'Bertie', later the abdicated Edward VIII, and Victoria's Grandson, is only referenced in his small branch on the family tree. This book was full of photos supposedly all taken by Edward VII's Queen Alexandra and sold to benefit charity. It contains photo's that appear real and 'tipped in', but they are rotogravureprints with half-tone processing. The photos not made to look like album additions have the feel of lithographs from therotogravure, a heavy printing process, but they are half-tones, not real lithos.
The dust jacket is in bad shape. A souvenir of it's former incarnation. It was not decorative and not meant to last. Note the price in hugenumerals, twice- 2/6 -That is 2 Shillings Sixpence. Very rare thing to have, nonetheless.
