This fossil of Knightia eocaena, a small prehistoric herring-like fish and the common name of Eocene Knight Fish. Size: Typically 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) in length for adults. Size of the Fossil is 3 3/8 " by 5 1/4"
Description: A slender, herring relative with a forked tail, visible vertebral column, ribs, and fins. The body is compressed laterally, and fossils often preserve fine details due to the depositional environment. The head may show an upturned mouth, indicating surface feeding habits.
Age/Date: Eocene epoch, approximately 50-56 million years old. Origin/Formation: Green River Formation, primarily from Fossil Lake deposits in southwestern Wyoming, USA (part of the Fossil Butte Member). This lagerstätte is known for exceptional preservation in fine-grained limestone or shale. Paleoecology: Lived in freshwater lakes; schooling fish that fed on plankton and small organisms. Other Notes: Knightia is part of the Clupeidae family (herrings) and represents an early teleost fish. Fossils like this are often split from matrix slabs and can show gut contents or even predation evidence. See photos for more description and the condition.
